In Search of Sisterhood

      Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate
women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to
promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. The first public
act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage
March in Washington D.C., March 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930.

A sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the
Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan
(Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the
Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization's
Five Point Programmatic Thrust:
•        Economic Development
•        Educational Development
•        International Awareness and Involvement
•        Physical and Mental Health
•        Political Awareness and Involvement

     Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter
Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter (BMAC) was chartered on March 1, 1987 by 36
illustrious women who continue to support the public service activities of our sorority
nationally, regionally, and locally.

Because the meaning of sisterhood is wholeheartedly embraced by Baltimore Metropolitan
Alumnae, chapter membership has grown over the years by appealing to and reclaiming
inactive Sorors. Membership has also grown through the membership intake process. On
November 21, 1988, April 12, 1991, April 26, 1996, February 7, 1999, April 8, 2001 and
April 13, 2003 initiates were welcomed into the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter.
As members of the largest public service sorority, the Sorors of BMAC have worked
diligently in many social and political activities. We remain cognizant of the many
challenges that affect African Americans and remain active and vocal in efforts to uplift
Baltimore and other regions of the global African American community.

BMAC is a member of the Historic, Dynamic, and Energetic Eastern Region. Visit the
Eastern Region website at
